Alaskan Lighthouse Adventure in ParadiseHarbour Light's 20th Anniversary Reunion Cruise Day 5 - Skagway, Alaska
"It's doubtful you'll succumb to gold fever, but if any place on earth can summon up the thrill of prospecting, it's Skagway. By embracing its gold-rush past, Skagway has managed to preserve a frontier spirit complete with saloons and dance-hall revues. If the spirit does overtake you, passage on the White Pass & Yukon Railway or a ride on the Klondike Highway will take you to places where you can roll up your sleeves and do some prospecting of your own"
Here, right next to where the ships docked, is where many guests boarded the train that offers a variety of tours to White Pass, very popular with easy access! Visit the website for White Pass Excursions for more pictures!
Any "Train Buffs" in the Group? Now here's an opportunity for an unforgetable journey, aboard one of the most “Scenic Railways in the World”, to the White Pass Summit. We'll begin our excursion by boarding our own "Private Car" connected to the train right next to the Infinity, "Dock-Side"! From Skagway we'll travel 20 miles from sea level to the Summit of the White Pass at 2,865 foot elevation! Along the way you will be able to relax in one of private old-fashioned parlor cars as we retrace the original route to the White Pass summit, passing Bridal Veil Falls, Inspiration Point and Dead Horse Gulch. Enjoy a breathtaking panorama of mountains, glaciers, gorges, waterfalls, tunnels, trestles and historic sites. See the original Klondike Trail of ‘98 worn into the rocks, a permanent tribute to the thousands of souls who passed this way in search of fortune. This journey takes around 3 1/2 hours for the round trip so I have arranged to "stock" the private car with a little refreshments and maybe even a nice surprise or two! With this optional excursion you will be able to choose from either the 8:15 am departure or the afternoon departure at 12:45 pm. Either one these excursion times will leave you with plenty of time to visit this wonderful little port and to plan a meal accordingly.
Going up, and going down! We'll get pulled up one way and then the engines disconnect from the cars, pull along side and reconnect on the other end. We "flip the seats over and change sides so everyone gets to see both sides of the 20 miles we journey from sea level to the White Pass elevation at 2865 feet.
Here we go headed back and going "down" on the left, if you're brave and want to get a great shot we'll "rotate" everyone outside, it is a pretty cool spot to add to those many photographic memories. These next two shots are from going up the tracks to White Pass. The first shot shows the wooden trellis right before the engine heads into the tunnel. With a quick turn-a-round outside the car you'll see the other end of the train just behind us. There are absolutely incredible views all around as we chug along! Below is our "turn-a-round" at the pass, not really a turn-a-round but it is definitely a change of direction. Next shot is the inside of one of the White Pass Railroad's passage cars, not bad, comfortable and plenty of room.
We leave Skagway at 6:00 pm and cruise out through the inside passage where we will pass 3 more lights that should very visible. The image here on your right is a Princess Cruise ship we passed up through the window of the "specialty restaurant" the SS United States, very nice, if you get a chance treat yourself to a great experience. Okay ladies, get your dancing shoes on and drag the guys to the dance floor! Another benefit to cruising, the entertainment! Nightly shows in the main theater and many small venues around for dancing or just people watching!
There are many options to enjoy on a cruise ship. You can be as busy as you want to be or you can do nothing at all, it's all up to you!
I know where I'll be next June, how about you?
