Alaskan Lighthouse Adventure in ParadiseHarbour Light's 20th Anniversary Reunion Cruise Day 3 - Ketchikan, Alaska
"In addition to being the jumping-off point for seaplane excursions into the Misty Fjords National Monument and its 2.2 million acres of wilderness nirvana, Ketchikan is also the ancestral home of the Tlingit tribe. Another "must-see" here is the world's largest collection of totem poles. You can learn what motivates someone to turn a piece of lumber into a towering work of art at the Saxman Native Village and Totem Bight and Totem Heritage Center"
Day 3 - Brings us to our first "port of call", Ketchikan, Alaska! ALA - Ketchikan, Alaska
During this Shore Excursion, enjoy a short, narrated tour through Ketchikan, Alaska after we leave the shop dockside en route to the tour guide's private dock. Once onboard you'll be able to relax in the heated main cabin or enjoy the open-air observation deck as we embark to circumnavigate the historic Guard Island Lighthouse, established in 1903 and now home to a family of Harbor Seals. Next up will be a visit to the floating Umatilla Lightship. Not only will you be up close with the lighthouses but along the way we'll be able to view 10 eagles nests, abundant eagles and other wildlife that may include Humpback and Orca whales, sea lions, deer, bear, salmon and wolves. Fully narrated by knowledgeable lighthouse captains this excursion will also include complimentary hot beverages, soft drinks, salmon spread, crackers, cheese, fresh fruit and cookies. Here we are, stop #1, Ketchikan Alaska! Early morning arrival find a little moisture on the pier, right downtown. Our first narrated bus departs at 7:30 am, the first of four private shore excursions, Ketchikan's Alaskan Lighthouse Adventure!
An adult eagle nesting in the trees will be just one of our sights to enjoy and photograph. Now here on the right, if you miss the ship in Seattle, this is one arriving two days later to catch up with the rest of us!
Now we're headed to get up close & personal with "Guard Island Lighthouse"! On my visit I was greeted with display of Bald Eagles that was very cool.
The one full size adult sat on top of the light while the "adolescence" kids played and chased each other for the whole time we spent floating around the island!
Below is "Captain Rob" as we get real close to the Lightship Umatilla. "LV 196" served at Umatilla Reef (Washington) from 1961 to 1971, when it was decommissioned. The vessel was reportedly near Seattle in 1980, but then it disappeared from the lightship community until it was spotted here in Ketchikan in 2000. The lightship no longer bears the name Umatilla, as you will see, it is now the Marine Bio Researcher.
Communication needs? Here was one of my offices onboard the Infinity. This one is at the Cova Cafe which has a good "hotspot" for the internet and great snacks! Keep in mind you will have to pay for the internet service. If you need to you can use your cell phone when we are out to sea, but beware it's $2.50 per MINUTE!
Mow here is a shot from the Aft deck at the "Oceanview Cafe", a great spot for the photographer or just to hang out. Inside on this deck is the alternative dining restaurant, "Destinations". This is nice spot if you want to get away form the rest of us, dinner only with mostly fresh seafood along with the best view from a dining area!
Okay, I'm ready to go again, but first it's off to the Tracy Arm Fjord!
